Just an idea for using gradients
Click here to
download my Highlights Gradient
Start with an image 500 X 500 pixels.

Layer one-Gradient set to Linear-Repeats 0-Angle 0
|
|
|
|
Layer two-Gradient set to Linear Gradient-Repeats 0-Angle 90-Blend Mode>Screen
|
|
|
|
You can change it to Grey Scale or Colorize it.
 
|
|
|
