Wood Texture

This tutorial is NOT to be scripted or made into a "Quick Guide" unless it is for your own personal use.

To do this tutorial you will need a working knowledge of PSP. If you are new to PSP, or have a problem doing this tutorial, you can find me at Raven's PSP forum, be happy to help you out.

You also need Flaming Pear's Flood Plug-in. There is a free demo available.( installing filters )

Note: Almathera's Puddle Filter can be used in place of the Flood Filter. It's a free filter and your results will be a little different.

Open an image 600 X 300, transparent background.
Flood Fill with the color #713A0A.

Go to Effects>Plug-in Filters>Flaming Pear>Flood.
Set the top setting for Horizon to 49 or less.
You want to use the effect on more than half your image.
Go to the Dice on the bottom left and just click for random patterns until you see one you like. Click OK.

Go to Image>Flip.
Open the Flood Plug-in again and repeat your last setting, or try the random button again for more variety.

Go to Layers>Duplicate.
Go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Charcoal.
Use these settings.

Open your Layer Palette and drag the "Copy of Layer 1" under "Layer 1".

Click the small arrow next to the word "Normal" to see your Layer Blend Modes. Click on Multiply.
Move the Slider to lower the Opacity of Layer 1.

Go to Layers>Merge>Merge Visible
Go Image>Rotate. Check the box that says "All Layers" and Degrees 90.
If your image suddenly seems to shrink, just go to View>Normal Viewing and it will look normal again.

If you want a little extra in your wood, go to Layers>Duplicate.
Go to Effects>Geometric Effects>Twirl. Try a setting between 300 and 500.

Click on your Deform Tool . Pull each side in some.
Click Apply on your Tool Options Palette when you're done.

Go to Layers>Merge>Merge Visible.
If  you want some more highlights or you want to darken some areas, use the Retouch Tool .
Just experiment with the different settings.

Use the Deform Tool again to draw the sides in some.
That's pretty much it. :) Experiment with different colors, textures and texture effects.
The random button in the Flood Plug-in will give you a huge variety also.
You can experiment with bevels to make a finished wood look.

You can also try adding light effects or coloring your wood with a gradient.
To use a gradient to color your wood, go to Layers>New Raster Layer.
Flood Fill with your gradient and experiment with the Layer Blend Modes.

Experiment, and have fun!
