Creating a Background Image with Paint Shop Pro 8

This tutorial is NOT to be scripted or made into a "Quick Guide" unless it is for your own personal use.

Step 14

Go to Layers Merge>Merge Down.
Go to Effects>Effects Browser>Illumination Effects.
Scroll through them until you see something that might look good with your image.
Click on the thumbnail preview and then click either Apply or Modify.
Apply will add the effect to image but you can always use "undo" ( Ctrl + Z ) if you don't like it.
Modify will bring up the Lights Filter so you can make adjustments.

Find Soft Light (lower left) and click Modify.

 Note
: If the images in the Effects Browser are too small you can adjust them.
Go to File>Preferences>General Program Preferences>Display and Caching.

I usually adjust the Darkness level first, here I changed it from 70 to 40.
I changed the Intensity from 40 to 15 and left the other settings alone.

Just experiment with the different lights, settings, and colors of the lights until you find something you like.
Click OK when you're satisfied with the look.

Step 15

I went to the Effects Browser again and picked one of my custom presets.

This time I lowered the Darkness to 0 and changed the Vertical setting of the light to -90.

Step 16

Go to Layers>Duplicate.
Go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Brush Strokes.
Find the Preset Oil or use these settings if you don't have it.
The Color is #808080.

Open your Layer Palette and change the Layer Blend Mode to Lighten.

Step 17

You could leave it like that or go to Adjust>Blur>Blur Average to soften the effect a bit.

Step 18

Now you have your basic background.
You can easily change the look with Adjustment Layers.

Go to Layers>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast

You can easily delete the adjustment layer if you want a different look.
Here's an example using a adjustment layer with Curves.

Step 19

Add some text and/or an image, just experiment with things.

Here I added a couple of planets from Jasc Cosmos tube and Chromed them.
Cosmos is a PSP 7 tube, you can find it on Jasc's PSP 7 components page.
I also added a flare tube from Pinoy 7.

That's it, you're done..:)
