Old Paper Texture

This tutorial is NOT to be scripted or made into a "Quick Guide" unless it is for your own personal use.

To do this tutorial you will need a working knowledge of PSP. If you are new to PSP, or have a problem doing this tutorial, you can find me at Raven's PSP Forum, be happy to help you out.

You also need my Paper Gradient.
Click here to download. Unzip the file and place it in your gradients folder.

This is an easy tutorial, I've included many screen shots to try to show each step in detail.

Step 1

Open a new image 350 X 350
Set the background to Transparent.

Click on the foreground swatch to open the Materials Palette.
Find the "mqc-paper" gradient and set it like this.

Flood Fill with the gradient.

Step 2

Go to Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Add Noise.
Use these settings.

You won't see any change in your image. the noise gives the fur filter something to work with.

Step 3

Go Effects>Texture Effects>Fur.
Use these settings.

Step 4

Go to Effects>Edge Effects>Enhance More.

Repeat Enhance More.

Step 5

Go to Layers>Duplicate.

Go to Image>Rotate>Free Rotate.
Make sure to uncheck "All Layers".

Step 6

Open your Layer Palette. ( F8 )
Go to Copy of Raster 1.
Click the small arrow next to Normal, set the Layer Blend Mode to Dodge.
Grab the slider, lower the Opacity to 50%.

Step 7

Go to Layers>Merge>Merge Down.

Go to Adjust>Hue and Saturation>Colorize.
Use these settings.

Step 8

Go to Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Clarify.
Set it to 2.

Go to Adjust>Color Balance>Black and White Points.
Set the top 3 color boxes to        #000000   #808080   #FFFFFF
Set the bottom 3 color boxes to   #000000   #340000   #808080
Uncheck the bottom 2 boxes.

Step 9

Go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Chrome.
Use these settings.

Step 10

Go to Effects>Artistic Effects>Aged Newspaper.
Set it to 100%.

If you don't want the blurred looked you could use Sepia Toning.

Step 11

Go to Image>Rotate>Rotate Counter-clockwise 90.

Go to Adjust>Sharpness>Unsharp Mask.
Use these settings.

Step 12-Optional

Go to Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>Highlight/Midtone/Shadow.
Leave the Midtone at 50 and the Highlight at 100.
Adjust the Shadow to darken your paper some.

Just a note:

You would probably not get the same results with a different size canvas, but if you go to Effects>Image Effects>Seamless Tiling and use the default settings, you'll get a pattern that will fill any size canvas.

That's it, you're done.:)

Experiment, and have fun!
